I believe there have been several American makers of AK-pattern rifles for a few years now. This one being all black/synthetic could be domestic, or just an AK with the wood furniture replaced.

Oh for fucks sake lady, trigger discipline! Wouldn’t be surprise of there are people standing downrange of the muzzle.

Reasons vary - some like the “rebel” image associated with it since they are used by a lot of insurgencys and such. They are (were) also dirt cheap to buy compared to AR pattern rifles (though not true these days, they are about the same price). Also ammo availability/compatibility - AK-47’s shoot the 7.62x39mm round. It’s about half the price of comparable centerfire rifle ammo (such as the AR’s 5.56x45mm round). You can modify an AR to chamber that round, but there are lots of issues with feeding it from magazines because of the cartridge’s highly tapered body. That’s why AK’s have the big, curved “banana” magazines. The AR has a deep, straight mag well so the curved mags won’t work.
Also, they are completely indestructible. No doubt AR pattern rifles are pretty robust, but with an AK you can go chop a tree down - and I don’t mean shoot it, I mean literally beat the tree with the rifle until it falls over - then soak it in salt water, pour honey down the barrel, bury it in sand, freeze it, and the load it with the most dirt cheap garbage ammo you can find and it will function flawlessly.

Is it weird that this is the first thing I notice every time I see a picture of someone holding a gun? Like, almost without fail, military personnel have excellent trigger discipline; random people posing with guns are always awful.

No, I think that’s good.

Most times I find it’s people who think guns are “cool and/or toys” and don’t seem to grasp their destructive power. I think it has to do with the level of naivete that you get when you don’t see the end result of something living being shot and only shoot at targets.

yep, if you walked around like that in the military youd have people tackling you; it’s literally one of the very first things you learn.
